i've been having a lot of boy drama in my life lately, and when i heard this song recently it made me cry. the melody and the lyrics are just so heartrendingly beautiful and simple and pure. this is how i feel about my man.

poor little pigs

the NY Times has a scary piece about the terrible inhumane conditions in which most pigs in this country are kept. as a major consumer of pork products, i feel particularly guilty. i don't have any moral objection to eating animals, but it seems obvious that we owe it to them to prevent unnecessary suffering.

crap. i guess i better start seeking out cruelty-free bacon. does that even exist? :(

postscript: niman ranch looks pretty good. and wins all kinds of taste tests. of course, i only looked into their products because the company was founded by the husband of the author of that NYT piece... wait a sec -- am i being played? oh well. they're still good to their pigs and make (allegedly) delicious bacon. that's what's important.

i think my problems are possibly behind me, or at least on their way. the weather is finally turning nice, i just reconnected with an old friend, and the new season of America's Next Top Model is underway. also the citrus fairy just brought me a giant bag of meyer lemons from california. life is decidedly okay again.

mystery penny

this morning i noticed a penny sitting on the windowsill outside the kitchen window of my third-story apartment. how did it get there? it's a mystery.

it was lying heads up, so i figured it was a good-luck mystery penny. when i opened the window and picked it up, i saw that not only was it a regular good-luck mystery penny, but it was FROM THE YEAR I WAS BORN. spooky! (that makes it extra-good-luck, for those of you unfamiliar with how these things work.)

i like the way this day has started. mystery penny appears from the sky to tell me things are gonna be okay.

he mostly liked to eat

i love kids. there's this article in the times about this terrible fire that killed like 8 kids in the bronx (very, very sad, obviously). and then this is from the very end of the article:

A schoolmate of 7-year-old Mahamadou at P.S. 73 said he knew all five of the dead Magassa boys. "They're all nice kids," said Christopher Henriquez, 8. Of his friend, he said, "He mostly liked to eat. If he sees something he likes in the cafeteria, he takes it two times."

A friend of Bandiougou's, Donovan Lebron, 10, said, "I feel bad because he didn't get to live that long. He was only 11."
