i'm a lawyer!!

i passed the new jersey bar exam! yay. (we're supposed to get the new york results on tuesday.)

i'm out of town, technically on "vacation" today, so i didn't check my work email until about 1 p.m. eastern. the other two newbie associates had sent emails to all the other attorneys, saying that they had passed, and there were emails from several other attorneys saying, "congratulations to ___ and ___!" and planning a celebratory pizza lunch for today. so i'm sure everyone in the office was like, "gosh, no email from ilona, huh?" and assumed that i was keeping mum because i was the only one who didn't pass.

embarassment at that thought motivated me to call up someone in the office and ask them to root through my desk to find my NJ candidate ID number so i could look up my results online. otherwise i would have had to wait til tuesday to find out, which is way too long to suffer through such an erroneous misperception from my co-workers.

Did you also take the California bar?

nope. the most you can take at one time is two. also, you can't combine california's exam with any other states, because while most states' exams are only two days (one day for state-specific essays and then one day for the "multistate" multiple-choice exam), california has two state-specific days.

to make this more clear, here was my bar exam schedule:

    tuesday - NY essay day
wednesday - multistate multiple choice day
    thursday - NJ essay day

    ---------

but if you're taking the california exam, the schedule is like this:

    tuesday - CA essay day
wednesday - multistate multiple choice day
thursday - another CA essay day

When did you go to Albany to take the exam? I thought you were in Cali all summer. Anyways. You're not a lawyer until you get admitted. You still have to apply for admissions, fill out your life story, have the interview, they contact your references, etc... Basically, if you have a criminal past, you might not get in. Do you?

A man once said think of a world without lawyers.

    Peace the world over!

Actually I think it was Lionel Hutz attorney of law from the Simpsons fame.

i took it at the javits center in NYC at the end of july. out-of-staters could take it in NYC, instead of albany, if we won the "laptop lottery". suckers in albany had to write their essays by hand.

nope, no criminal past. i should be a shoo-in.

− Reduce the number of lawyers. They are like beavers -- they get in the middle of the stream and dam it up.

That's not fair that you got to take it with a laptop. Part of the tradition of taking the bar is that you suffer like others have for hundreds of years. My hand almost fell off writing those essays, the MPT, etc. I suppose they even gave you padded chairs eh? Did you wear earplugs? When mine fell out, you could hear the sounds of thousands of pages being turned, and it sounds like an ocean wave. I would have failed the thing without my ear plugs.

Reduce the amount of lawyers eh... I'm a lawyer, but I don't practice. There are too many, but most lawyers don't do it for very long. Unless you work non profit or government, you're highly likely to hate you job and your life if you're slaving away at a firm. It at first wasn't by choice, but I'm very happy I don't do that. I'm going to pay off my loans, and then go back to school for something I really want to do.

I am a horrible typist and if I had to take the bar exam with a computer I would have failed.

    "Most" don't practice for long?

I'm not disputing you. I have no idea. Anyone have any stats about how many leave practice after how long?

Ilona, could you find out and have a memo on my desk by morning?
