danger

my sister just told me that a girl she knows was attacked recently, not too far from where we live. three guys followed her into her apartment building when she was coming home, raped her, held her hostage all night, and then took her to her bank, at gunpoint, when it opened, and made her take out all her money and give it to them.

gentrification is a dangerous game. but it's impossibly expensive to live in safe (i.e. well-to-do) neighborhoods. so what's a girl to do? stop leaving the house? take taxis everywhere instead of walking at night? always walk with other people? spend 3/4 of your income on an apartment in a building with a doorman?

i think my immediate neighborhood is probably somewhat safer (busier, more middle-class) than the neighborhood where this happened. but the truth is, there's not really anything you can do to ensure this kind of thing won't happen to you. the best solution might be just to lie in bed all day with the covers up over your head.

Ilona, sorry, but you're wrong. There are things you can do.
    1) ALWAYS be aware of your surroundings
    2) Never let your cultural sensitivity get in the way of your personal safety. You don't like the two guys walking toward you on the street? Move away. Your safety first, another person's feelings come second.
    3) Take self defense classes. I don't mean gay judo. I mean, learn how to use Pepper Spray, Knives, Collapsable Steel batons, and eventually, handguns. Do it with your girlfriends and do it every Saturday for a year. You will feel empowered and safer once you are proficient.

You are responsible for your own safety. The only thing a cop is going to do is fill out the report after you've been victimized.

Protect yourself from these fucking animals!

being aware of your surroundings is the best thing you can do.
try not to put yourself in positions where you can be cornered.
know where you'd run if you had to.
    turn that ipod OFF.
call a friend on you cell phone while you walk home. hell, you could just hold it up to your head.
attackers want an easy mark. anything you can do to make yourself an undesirable target helps. --acc

    Noo Yawk, Noo Yawk.
    A helluva town.

    *lol*

I guess the risks are worth it.
For the fragrance of urine and feces.
For the grime and the exhaust fumes.
    The blustery, slushy winters,
    The swealtering summers.

If I can take it there,
    I can take it anywhere.

Maybe you shouldn't live in NYC then? And you make 140k, I doubt you're spending 3/4 of your income on rent.
