china #1: the great wall
today (saturday) in beijing we went to the "forbidden city" (the former emperor's palace which was off-limits to the public for, oh, hundreds of years, until 1925), which was kind of boring, and to the great wall of china, which was pretty awesome. being there seemed almost surreal. it felt like an accomplishment in itself - something to check off the list of important things to do in a lifetime.
walking along the top of the wall mostly consists of a lot of climbing up and down stairs, because the wall runs along the mountaintops.
some parts of it are insanely steep. walking down again was almost as difficult as climbing up. here's a picture of me making a face to help demonstrate how steep the steps are:

you should've taken a picture of you sitting on that footstool in those shorts with your purse.

glad to know someone is keeping track of my wardrobe choices for me!
travel tip for readers: don't overburden yourself by packing a new pair of pants/shorts/skirt for every day of your trip, if you'll be gone longer than a couple of days, since that would make your luggage super-heavy. it's okay to wear the same pants a few times - as long as you're changing your underwear, of course!
i bought those stripey shorts in japan. aren't they adorable? i think i wore them twice on the 10-day trip, but they happened to be photo-heavy days.
i'm sure with your clever detective skills you also noted that i'm wearing the same brown shirt with the stripey shorts in both japan and china. but i don't in fact double-dip on shirts - i had the shirt laundered in between.
thanks for writing!

what kind of name is "infusion"? is that some kind of hippy name? does this *infusion* have parents that are into tea? if that's the case, i would have gone with "chamomile" or "darjeeling"...hell, even "yerba mate" or "LIPTON"....
anyway, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ILONA! i hope i got the day right. that's what it says on my yahoo calendar...you better call me when you move to nyc...take care!

wholeheartedly approve of wearing the same shorts every day (even though you didn't). when i travel--even for like a month or something--i only travel with one pair of shorts and one pair of long pants. multiple socks and undies and a few shorts. i lived out of a regular backpack (not a giant one) for a month in europe.
